Lola Burgueño is an Associate Professor at the University of Malaga (UMA), Spain. She is a member of the Atenea Research Group and part of the Institute of Technology and Software Engineering (ITIS).

Research and Community Service

Her research interests focus mainly on the fields of Software Engineering (SE) and of Model-Driven Software Engineering (MDE). She has made contributions to the application of artificial intelligence techniques to improve software development processes and tools; uncertainty management during the software design phase; model-based software testing, and the design of algorithms and tools for improving the performance of model transformations, among others.

She is an active member of the software engineering community. She has been PC (co-)chair of ECMFA'21, SLE'22, JISBD'25 (Spanish) and ICWE'26. She is the General Chair of MODELS'26. She is regularly invited to deliver keynotes, invited talks, and lectures at international events and courses, and she often serves on panels. She also acts as a jury member in PhD vivas and other academic committees. She is part of Program Committees and has served as co-chair and organizer in more than 30 prestigious international conferences such as ASE, ICSE, MODELS, RE, SLE, STAF, ICMT, ECMFA and ICSOC. She regularly reviews papers for journals such as TSE, ASE, JSS, EMSE, SoSyM, etc.

She is a member of the ACM and SISTEDES (Spanish). She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal on Software and Systems Modeling (SoSyM), and part of the Steering Committee of MODELS, SLE and JISBD. She is also a member of the WG on Diversity & Inclusion of Informatics Europe.

She is currently co-supervising three PhD Students: one at the University of Malaga, one at the Open University of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain) and one at TU Wien (Vienna, Austria).

Education and Professional Experience

She graduated in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Málaga in September 2011, earned her master's degree in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in September 2012 and graduated from her PhD with honors in April 2016.

She has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Open University of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain; 2018-2022) and CEA List (Paris, France; 2018-2020), and has been a visiting researcher at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, USA; 4 months, 2014), Vanderbilt University (Nashville, USA; 3 months, 2016) and Université de Montréal (Montréal, Canada; 6 months, 2022).

Teaching

She is currently teaching three courses at the University of Málaga: Requirements Engineering, Foundations of Computer Science, and Advanced Programming I.

She supervises mutiple Bachelor’s and Master’s theses every year, some of them with research results and agreements with companies.

In the past, she has taught courses in official BSc and MSc degrees at the University of Málaga, Marbella International University Centre (an English-speaking private university) and the Open University of Catalonia, as well as courses based on agreements with private companies such as Accenture.

Initiatives

Lola is actively promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). She is a member of the working group on Diversity & Inclusion of Informatics Europe, having co-organized the latest workshop at the European Leaders Summit (ECSS 2025). She is involved in local initiatives such as ComoTú and Cátedra Hedy Lamarr, which aim to increase the visibility of women in STEM, and regularly visits schools and high schools to give talks, trying to act as a role model, raising awareness and demystifying stereotypes.

She is committed to disseminating and communicating science. With the goal of making it accessible to the general public, among others, she has been interviewed by different newspapers, including El País (the most read newspaper in Spain), for which she has also written an article. She also contributes regularly to important portals and speciallized blogs such as modeling-languages.

Recently, she is gaining interest in actively supporting open access to knowledge and open science with fair publishing models.
